LM Studio vs Ollama: which should a business use?

Updated 2026-10-04

Short answer: Both are good, and both can run private AI on your laptop. Choose LM Studio if you want a point-and-click app to try models. Choose Ollama if you want something that scripts and other programs can call, which suits routines you repeat. Our scorecards use Ollama only, for now. A result tells you how a laptop does with Ollama, and LM Studio could differ.

The two at a glance#

Ollama LM Studio
What it is Software that runs open models. It has a desktop app, a command line and a local interface for other programs. A desktop app for finding, downloading and chatting with models. It also has a command-line tool and a local server.
Systems macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer. Apple M-series Macs use both the processor and the graphics chip. Intel Macs use the processor only. Windows 10 version 22H2 or newer. Linux. macOS 14.0 or newer on Apple Silicon. Windows on x64 or ARM, where x64 needs AVX2 support. Linux.
Cost and licence Open source under the MIT licence. Free to use at home and at work since 8 July 2025. Its terms allow personal or internal business use.
Finding models Ollama's own library, plus any GGUF model from Hugging Face with one command. A search tab inside the app that reaches Hugging Face, plus a "Use this model" button on Hugging Face.
Local server Runs on your own machine only, by default. Offers a local server with OpenAI-style endpoints.
Memory advice from the maker For its first example model, a download of about 7.2 GB, it recommends 8 GB of available graphics memory or shared memory on a Mac. Recommends 16 GB or more of memory on a Mac and on Windows. It says 8 GB is possible on a Mac with smaller models. On Windows it recommends at least 4 GB of graphics memory.
Cloud features Optional cloud models, which need a sign-in and run on Ollama's servers. Makes network requests for model search, downloads and updates. It also has separate cloud services.

Sources for the table are the vendors' own pages: Ollama on GitHub, the Ollama quickstart, macOS and Windows pages, the Ollama FAQ and cloud page, and for LM Studio its overview, system requirements, server page, offline page, free-for-work post and terms.

Vendor pages change. Check them again before you buy a laptop for either app.

What they have in common#

  • Your chat stays on your machine. Ollama says it does not see your prompts or data when you run locally. LM Studio says nothing you type into a chat leaves your device, and that documents you add stay on your machine.
  • They share a model format. Both can run GGUF models from Hugging Face. The Hugging Face pages for Ollama and LM Studio show how.
  • Both are built on llama.cpp. That is how Hugging Face describes them. Llama.cpp is a popular framework for running models, according to the Hugging Face GGUF page.
  • Both reach the cloud if you ask them to. Check that the model you chose is a local one before you handle private documents.

Which suits you#

Pick LM Studio when:

  • You want to see and click. You can search, download, load a model and chat in one window.
  • You are comparing a few models by hand.
  • Nobody on your side will write scripts.

Pick Ollama when:

  • You want the same job to run the same way every time, such as summarising each new contract in a folder.
  • A developer or a setup service is connecting AI to your other tools. Ollama listens on your own machine at port 11434 by default.
  • You want free, open-source software.

A note on work use. Before 8 July 2025, using LM Studio at work meant filling in a form or contacting the company. Its announcement says that is no longer needed. Read the current terms yourself before you roll it out to a team.

Which one we use#

Our test tool is built on Ollama, and version 1 of our method uses Ollama only. Our setup service installs Ollama. LM Studio is an optional extra there.

This is a choice about measurement, not a verdict on quality. We do not claim that Ollama is faster or better than LM Studio, because we have not measured LM Studio.

What this means for your laptop#

The app matters less than your laptop's memory. Both apps need the same thing from the machine: enough memory for the model and the document. Read how much memory you need, then open the laptop list or the ranking for a job, such as invoice extraction.
